Banaue Rice Terraces, Philippines' Stairways to Heaven

The breathtaking panoramic view of Banaue Rice Terraces are the manifestation of the Igorots inextricably relationship with nature. For two millenniums now, the Igorots managed to preserve their tribal cultural practices, this maintain the complex farming system in Banaue's unique mountainous terrain. They have succeeded the test of time, up to now the terraces are still the main source of rice, corn and other crops in the area.

Rice Terraces of the Philippines Cordilleras' inscription in UNESCO's World Heritage List was in 1995. Protection and conservation of the rice terraces by the National Cultural Heritage and other non-government organizations.

In some areas, the traditional stilt houses were abandoned by the locals. Urbanization have influenced people to move to their concrete houses with aluminium roofing.

According to some elders a number of their children have chosen other careers than farming the terraces. This has left some parts of the terraces abandoned and slowly eroding. On the brighter side, those staying are helping the elders in tending the terraces.

The elders are more than happy to wait for tourists visiting view points for photography sessions. This is one of their past time when they are not farming or unable to do farming due to old age.

Wooden images is common in Banaue and it is called the anito or idol. It is a pre-hispanic belief  in the Philipines, wherein images may be seen indoors or outdoors to represent deceased relatives and/ or gods. It serves to remember the deceased relatives or seek gods guidance and protection.

Interesting places to visit in Banaue:
The five inscribed clusters of rice terraces are Nagacagan terrace cluster,  Hungduan terrace cluster, Mayoyao terrace cluster, Bangaan terrace cluster, Batad terrace cluster - some of these clusters' spectacular view can be seen along the way to Sagada
Tappiyah Waterfalls, 70 meter waterfalls, Patpat Sitio, small sub-village in Batad, Ifugao weaving and Ifugao handmade knives.

Here are the exciting ways to Banaue :
by car, via the three interconnected highways from EDSA Balintawak, Quezon City right towards North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), continue to Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), continue to Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) take Victoria exit towards Tarlac-Victoria Road, continue along Rizal St, Victoria, continue along Guimba-Victoria Road, turn left to Guimba-Aliaba Road, turn right to Nueva Ecija-Pangasinan Road, turn left to Pan-Philippine Highway to Banaue.
by bus, G.V. Florida Transport, Ohayami Trans
by plane,  Cebu Pacific  , PAL Express via Clark International Airport and take bus to Banaue.

There are quite few accommodation that are located in different areas in Banaue. There are hostels, inns, and homestay.at very reasonable prices. You will have to check though if these accommodation suits your needs. Check out various online bookings and reviews before making a decision.
